"Police officers kill more Americans than terrorism, yet we've been asked to sacrifice our most sacred rights for fear of falling victim to it. "
-Edward Snowden
Police forces have a long history in America, dating back to the early 1800's. Many would agree our police have done an effective job at keeping the peace and enforcing our laws throughout the years. The past few decades we have seen a massive increase in local, state and federal legislation, combined with the rise of terrorism a new culture among our police has emerged, where everyone is seen as a criminal. Police departments have become money generating machines, no longer connected with the communities they serve. Other factors are to blame, such as police militarization and Drug War policies. Sadly in America we are more likely to be killed by a police officer than a terrorist. Nearly 1,000 people are killed each year by police in America. Most shootings are justified, just like most police officers are just, but its that small number of bad apples we want to put under a microscope.
A study conducted by the University of South Florida and the Orlando Police Department found body cameras may be an effective way to improve the behavior of police officers. They randomly selected 46 officers to wear body cameras and compared them against 43 officers who did not. From March 2014 through February 2015, use-of-force incidents decreased by 53% among officers with the cameras. Civilian complaints against those officers also saw a 65% decline. Some would argue against body camera technology because of cost reasons, but considering the 500 million New York City taxpayers had to pay out the past five years for wrongful death, misconduct, and civil rights violation settlements body cameras could offer us a huge savings. Even a 20% drop in corruption would save hundreds of millions nationwide annually.
The 'Our Lives Matter' playlist was created so the public can easily view graphic video evidence of police shootings involving unarmed suspects. The playlist began in April 2015 after unarmed Walter Scott was gunned down by officer Michael Slager. The murder of Walter Scott was captured on cell phone video by a passing bystander. The video shows Mr. Scott running for his life as Officer Slager guns him down. After the shooting Slager attempted to plant evidence on Walter Scott, which can also be seen in the video. If the video did not exist, Michael Slager would not have been sentenced to 20 years, instead he would have most likely been promoted. Videos have been added frequently to the playlist ever since this tragic murder. Every video is reviewed, and if it's apparent lethal force was unnecessary the video is added to the playlist. If you know of any videos of unarmed people being shot by police, please send a link to [email protected], thank you. If you become outraged by any of the videos in this playlist, please channel your frustration with us and help lobby our local Governments and Washington. Tell them you want to see body cameras be mandatory for every police officer in the country.
